So what about Adam?

So I had a great question about Adam (nothing new, but it’s still a great question), as a follow up to my post about Cas getting Sam out of hell that I answered privately, but I’m sharing now.

Just wondering your take on this…what about Adam? I know Sam and dean haven’t know him for very long but he’s their brother!! They cared about him and now what?! Plot hole again or did I miss something?

You know, I agree with the majority that it’s horrible that Adam’s been forgotten. Dean made one request on his behalf and that’s been it. Especially considering how Adam got dragged into everything, it’s really unfair and horrible to think about what he must be going through and how Sam and Dean don’t seem to care. I don’t think we’ve missed anything, but it’s not necessarily a plot hole either. I mean, it would be pretty easy for them to find a way to say Adam’s soul is back in heaven. One sentence and the problem is solved. I think the issue is that they have assumed (unfortunately probably rightly so) that the average viewer has forgotten about Adam, and bringing him back up would only confuse them or just be an unnecessary diversion. Which sucks for us not-average viewers who do still care.

Adam is the perfect symbol of how the writers think we don’t care about the side characters. (Or that they don’t want us to care about the side characters.) Which is absurd. No character, no matter how main, exists in a vacuum, and the people that cross their paths make them who they are, reveal who they are. They are important, damn it.
